Anger

There’s always something underneath it

Anger is often misunderstood. It can feel explosive or silent, outward or internal. Maybe your anger comes out in ways you regret—snapping at people you care about, holding grudges, or shutting down completely. Or maybe you’re someone who rarely expresses anger, but feels it simmering under the surface.

We offer anger therapy for adults in New York, New Jersey, and Florida, helping clients explore the roots of their anger, develop better tools for expressing it, and understand what it’s trying to communicate. Anger itself isn’t the problem—it’s how we relate to it.

What Does Anger Look Like?

Anger isn’t just yelling or losing control. It can show up in many forms, including:

  • Irritability, impatience, or frustration over small things

  • Passive-aggressive behavior or emotional withdrawal

  • Feeling on edge or like you’re “about to snap”

  • Chronic resentment or internalized rage

  • Shame or confusion about your own reactions

  • A sense that you’ve lost control of your emotional responses

Anger is often a protective response—covering pain, fear, or unmet needs. Therapy can help you understand where your anger is coming from and how to respond in ways that feel more aligned with who you are.

Small Ways to Regulate Anger (Right Now)

While deeper work happens in therapy, here are a few ways to start managing anger in the moment:

Pause before reacting. Step away, take a breath, count to 10—whatever gives you space

Name what you’re feeling underneath. Is there hurt? Fear? Disappointment? Anger is rarely just anger

Release tension physically. Go for a walk, squeeze a stress ball, or do something with your hands

Use grounding techniques. Try deep breathing, cold water, or focusing on your senses

Practice self-compassion. You’re not broken for feeling this way

These steps won’t “cure” anger—but they can help you respond, rather than react.

Our Approach to Anger Therapy

Anger is complex—and often deeply connected to past experiences, identity, and the environments we grew up in. In our work together, we’ll explore the roots of your anger without judgment, and build tools for managing it in ways that feel constructive, not destructive. My approach draws from:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and REBT to examine thought patterns that fuel reactive cycles

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to build skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness

Relational and trauma-informed therapy to explore how early relationships shaped your relationship with anger

Mindfulness-based strategies to create space between stimulus and response

Strengths-based work to help you tap into your values and emotional insight

Therapy isn’t about eliminating anger—it’s about learning to understand and work with it.
